Ritual Ruins was part of the CalArts production of Halloween 2023 "Ethereal Convergence". Serving as the "chill space" for the night, guests were invited to relax and take a break from the lively party atmosphere in the tranquil surroundings of the Ritual Ruins. As the lead scenic designer and story writer for the space, I worked to create a unique environment for guests to relax and take a break from the lively festivities. My goal was to provide a serene and captivating place for guests to recharge and enjoy a moment of peace during the event.
The Story: Mysterious figures wander between a sea of trees on the outskirts of the Robshaw Estate. Ruins of sacrificial stone slabs and failed portals are strewn across the ground. This is the perfect place to catch your breath, surrounded by quiet overseers, serene ambient sounds, and cushions on the forest floor. Maybe you’ll even catch the Pearls– the cloaked members of a witch’s coven– summon a spirit through the trees.
The walls were projection mapped with the Pearls mysteriously appearing every few minutes, running off of Q-Lab. The middle table was also painted with a UV paint to glow, along with a humidifier that blew puffs of steam.
